Andrew Chapman MSc., BSc., RHS Wisley Diploma in Practical Horticulture.
I am currently Head Gardener at Stiverton House in Steeton (West Yorkshire) where Pippa and I are developing our forest garden, large naturalised meadows, mini-orchard garden, large successional perennial borders, plant nursery and organic vegetable garden. We are also developing our smallholding as a LAND PROJECT permaculture demonstration site. I have extensive knowledge of horticultural practices particularly through my training and work whilst with the Royal Horticultural Society gardens at Wisley and Harlow Carr. My MSc at Edinburgh University in conjunction with Edinburgh Botanic Garden also gave me a grounding in botanical principles and biodiversity concepts. I spent four years as senior gardener and then team leader at RHS garden Harlow Carr, near Harrogate, and was responsible for maintaining and redeveloping their famous long borders. I have many years experience of horticultural practice working with herbaceous perennial design and management, plant propagation, botanical skills, rose culture, pruning techniques and many areas of fruit culture. I am currently also working for BCEP delivering growing sessions within the Bradford community.
(MSc) Biodiversity & Taxonomy of Plants Oct 2002-Sept 2003 University of Edinburgh & Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
RHS Diploma in Practical Horticulture Sept 1999-July 2001 Royal Horticultural Society,Wisley Garden awarded the N. K. Gould memorial prize for best herbarium collection IPPS award for most skilled plant propagator
(BSc) Horticultural Science Oct 1996-June 1999 University of Nottingham Ashgate prize for best student and Dullforce prize for highest mark
Alongside developing our smallholding and raising our children, Poppy and Moss, I am also a freelance horticultural consultant. Here at Fern Cottage I run several in depth courses concentrating on productive horticulture and particularly Mixed Orchard Gardening (Forest Gardening).
As an active member of Transition Keighley I am working on several community projects within Keighley to increase sustainable locally grown food sources. I have been granted funding from Community First which will be used as part of the Let's Grow Keighley initiative to deliver container growing sessions.
I have been researching good sustainable horticultural practice for many years now both during my Permaculture Design Course at the University of Bradford and my Diploma in applied Permaculture. As a member of the 'Permaculture Association Research Advisory Board' I am leading the development of a research handbook to enable non-academic practitioners to carry out meaningful research. I also soon hope to be a Permaculture Diploma Tutor and look forward to helping other apprentices on their learning pathways.
