Come along for a tour of the site and to learn more about volunteering at Fern Cottage
We welcome regular, occasional and one-off volunteers to help out and learn new skills working alongside qualified gardeners on our developing permaculture site in Steeton. Come and be part of the process and enjoy the fresh air, in all weathers!
Here at Fern Cottage we are developing four acres of north-west facing pasture into a productive ecosystem. We have a constantly evolving working design for the whole site that we will be putting into action over the next few years. As part of the LAND project we are a demonstration learning site, an initiative by the Permaculature Association.
We will be carrying out many different activities throughout the year including hedge planting, meadow management, planting up the forest garden, mixed orchard gardening, soft fruit culture, organic vegetable growing, many aspects of propagation from seed sowing to taking cuttings and grafting, polytunnel management, establishing and developing herbaceous borders, bulb planting, and much more. Ideally volunteer times are 10am to 4pm to inlcude a short masterclass relevant to the days activities or a Q&A session to ensure a fair exchange of skills and knowledge for your time and energy. Hot home-made soup and bread will be available for those staying for lunch and of course help yourself to tea, coffee and biscuits.
We are very flexible and can accommodate volunteers on different timetables from 1 day a week to a block of time.
Sorry no accommodation available at this time but hopefully 'woofing' opportunities will be available in the future.
